Is there any need to explain the plot of this film? To coincide with the release of Peter Jackson's version of the classic tale, Warner have released the 1978 cartoon version. Although not a classic, Ralph Bakshi's version is very likable and treats it's soucre material with the respect it deserves. The animation is of a high standard throughout and even though 'Rotoscope' - the process of laying animation over live action - has not been widely used since then, it works very effectively within the confines of this film. In the acting department, most of the characterisation work well, although some of the accents are a bit dodgy (especially Sams) and Ian Hurt stands out as being the most impressive, and I even noticed Victor Meldrew's long suffering wife in there somewhere. All in all, a fairly decent adaptation of the classic unfilmable book. I only hope that Jackson's sequel is not as long in coming as Bakshi's. |
