Sourcery

A Review by James Harrison

Sourcery is the 5th book in the Discworld series, and is also the third time in which we meet Terry Pratchett's original character for the Discworld adventures.

When looking back at the first two books (A Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic) the main reason for Rincewind is he is a tool used by Pratchett to move further into the unknown lands of the Disc. He is like the introduction to a new part of the world.

Sadly Sourcery doesn't come up to expectations of the return of Rincewind, in some ways; it seams that Pratchett has become already bored with the charter. Thankfully what saves the book is the narrative, after the disappearance of Rincewind from the Unseen University (Wizard School in many ways). The arrival of an evil and mad young wizard who ventures into the university and takes it over, gives the sense of the disc world becoming almost a child's story of good against evil.

Actually I'll stop it from there.... Spoiling the plot; and is really the only thing in which is the most effective in this book. Although, the characters do become more readable before the final few passages arrive, and the amusing factors of the Pratchett novels reappear. Altogether we also see the fate of Rincewind, and the fate of luggage in the last few sentences.

Altogether if you're a fan of the first two books (starring Rincewind) you would have to read this one to keep the dream on, and see what happens to our old friend who is completely useless in what he does in any sort of situasion in which he gets into.

If your not a fan of Rincewind there really much point, it doesn't effect any of the other books throughout the LONG line of the series (although it does for the Rincewind novels).

Sourcery is an average book compared to what has gone before, but also shapes what happens to its main characters hear after. Worth a look at if your not that worried in what you read.

Rincewind Will Return

6/10
