| The
Last Hero: A Discworld Fable
by Terry Pratchett & Paul Kidby a review |
|
With the latest "proper" discworld novel winging its way towards as in this month, this offering in a lavish novella with outstanding illustrations by Paul Kidby, who while is different in style from regular Discworld illustrator the late and great Josh Kirby, is no less impressive. The plot has ancient, living legend, Cohen the Barbarian plotting to return fire to the gods and accidentally extinguishing all life on the disc. It is then up to a new bred of hero, namely Rincewind, the discs worse wizard, Leonard of Quirm, the greatest inventor the disc has ever seen but seldom on the same planet as everyone else and law obsessed Captain Carrot of the Ankh Morpork city watch. These intrepid heroes embark on the Discworld's space flight to beat Cohen to the gods home first. As ever Pratchett has constructed a watertight plot, great characters and a truly hilarious story, all balanced wonderfully with Kidby's brilliant artwork. Proving once and for all that despite what anyone else may say, Terry Pratchett is one of the best writers working today. Buy it now
