A Kiss of Shadows

by Laurell K Hamilton

a review

It embarrases me to admit that a Kiss of Shadows is the first book I have read by Laurell K Hamilton. A Kiss of Shadows is a mixed bag of a novel, stomping through a mixture of genres with a happy glee like a...giant stomping thing. One part fantasy, one part detective and a huge dollop of sex for good measure.

The story concerns Merry Gentry, a detective in Los Angeles, who is also a princess on the run from her aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness, who wants her to come back. The plot is straightforward, the writing is stylish and carries you away, although there is a slight tendancy for Hamilton to dwell too long on what people are wearing, or what effect said clothes have or someone else.

Having said that it does not spoil the enjoyment of the book and I am looking forward to the next book in the series and I may also venture into my local bookshop and find a couple of Anita Blake novels.

Worth a read.
